Can I make a Poison Apple Cocktail without alcohol?

Yes! To make a Poison Apple Mocktail, you can replace the green apple schnapps and vodka with 4 ounces (½ cup) of sour green apple soda, such as Jones Green Apple Soda. If you are serving both cocktails and mocktails, you could give each one a different garnish, such as apples for the cocktails, and kiwi slices for the alcohol-free drinks so no one confuses the two, especially if you’re serving the mocktails to children, or people who do not consume alcohol.

Can I use any color of food coloring?

Sure, you can use your favorite color food coloring for the sugar rim. Try a green sugar rim to go along with the green theme, or try a vibrant blood red.

Does the recipe double well?

Yes, you can make a larger batch of the cocktail mixture by doubling (or tripling, or quadrupling!) the ingredients. However, most cocktail shakers only hold enough liquid and ice for 1-2 drinks so you will have to portion out the servings and make 1-2 drinks at a time.

Can this cocktail be made in advance?

Yes, you can make the mixture up to 1 day in advance and refrigerate it until you’re ready to make the cocktails. Stir or shake well before preparing the drinks since the kiwi seeds may settle at the bottom. Be sure not to add ice until you’re ready to serve because it will melt and dilute the drink.

Can I use a different fruit to make this cocktail?

If you don’t like kiwi or would like to experiment with other flavors, you could replace the kiwi with another fruit with a similar texture and color such as honeydew melon. If you don’t mind changing the green color of the drink, fresh pineapple, or mango would also be delicious. To replace the kiwi with another fruit, replace the 2 kiwis with 1 cup chopped fruit such as honeydew, pineapple, or mango.

Health benefits of kiwis

Kiwis are full of fiber and Vitamin C, and the seeds contain healthy fatty acids. The fuzzy skin is also edible and contains vitamins and fiber, if you dare to try it! Be sure to wash the skin thoroughly before eating it.

Each serving of this cocktail contains 1 whole kiwi so you’ll get a boost of nutrients and a serving of fruit while enjoying your Halloween cocktail.

Notes

  • Wilton Gel Food Coloring in Black is a vegan black food coloring that can be found online, in craft stores, and some well-stocked grocery stores. A little goes a long way! If you can’t find black food coloring or prefer another color, use your favorite color of vegan food coloring.
  • You can use store bought simple syrup, or make your own.
  • You can replace the simple syrup with flavored syrup in apple or kiwi flavor for additional flavor such as Monin or Torani brand.
Mocktail Variation: Replace the sour apple schnapps and vodka with green apple soda such as Jones Green Apple Soda, which has a similar color and flavor to the sour apple liquor.
