FAQ

How do you thicken a vegan casserole?

You can thicken a vegan casserole with a sauce or gravy, or by adding thickening ingredients like potatoes or tofu. If you’re making a casserole with gravy, such as shepherd’s pie, you can add flour or cornstarch to the gravy to thicken the sauce.

Is it better to bake casserole covered or uncovered?

It depends on the type of casserole and the desired texture. Covered casseroles will retain moisture and cook thoroughly whereas uncovered casseroles will get a crispy texture. Many recipes call for the best of both worlds by cooking covered first, then uncovered for a short time to get a nice, caramelized texture.

Do you cook vegetables before putting in casserole?

It depends on the recipe and type of vegetable. Many recipes call for cooking onions and garlic prior to baking them to bring out the flavor and caramelize the onions, but ingredients like squash and potatoes are typically added raw.

Can you freeze vegan casseroles?

Yes, vegan casseroles usually freeze well, but it depends on the particular recipe and ingredients. Freezing casseroles that contain tofu may alter the texture, so be sure to test it out before freezing an entire casserole. You can portion out casseroles and freeze, which is great for meal planning.

I loved this. I used sunflower seeds instead of cashews because that is what I had on hand. I had read from “Unmeat Athlete” that you can sub more affordable sunflower seeds for cashews.
